Text Box: Creative Lampworking

Lampworking is an ancient technique used by the Venetians to create glass beads.  For hundreds of years their techniques and glass formulas were kept secret. Advances in the refining and purification of chemicals has allowed others to discover the wonderful colours that were guarded for so long.

The process of lampworking begins with a torch using a mixture of propane and oxygen to produce a clean, hot flame. Italian Moretti, Lauscha and Bullseye glass rods are melted in the flame somewhat like  the consistency  of taffy.   A steel  mandrel is used to wrap the molten glass onto, thus creating a surface to be used as a palette for sculpting or layering with other colours of glass. All detail in the glass has been placed on, layer by layer, using smaller glass rods. Working at the torch is a form of meditation for Susan. She focuses on the creative process through a liquid medium, always endeavoring to capture light in  each bead. This element is fundamental in how her work is shaped, coloured and presented.  This is the essence of the medium.
